CD Review - Rock and Reprise - By Frank O. Gutch Jr:
Goddamn! Every once in awhile an album comes long that makes me want to get out of my chair and do a little jig and this week (month... year...) it is Toni Vere's Just To Be, a country roots phantasmagoria for everything that roots can be and seldom is. The Alternate Root Magazine pointed the way, stating something to the effect that... just what the hell did they say? I can't remember because when I followed the link and clicked, the music coming out of the speakers did a mindsweep. At first I thought I shouldn't be liking it but like a guy with a finger in a light socket, I couldn't pull away. I still can't. Read the full article ...
"I wanted to let Toni know and congratulate her on making the OutVoice Top Ten Song Chart for April, for "Wonder Why I Am Here? as well as the Top 40 CD Chart, "Just To Be", for April. All the best & congratulations again!" - Len Rogers

It’s not all the way folk, downright country or straight-up blues — it’s a tasty mix of all the above, and Vere pulls it off with a set list that’ll hold any room, making the audience smile all the while. Originally from Lethbridge, Vere considers herself a songwriter before a guitar player and a vocalist. Vere not only has a strong focus on songwriting, but also an enormous energy on stage ... read the full article
Leichster Bangs Interview May 2010:
Leicester Bangs: How did you start out making music?
Toni: Music picked me at the tender age of 5. I started writing songs when I was 12... living in a small town of 500 people didn't offer much in the way of recreation. I wasn't into sports, boys, or alcohol... I did what any good-natured odd child would do... I turned to music... (laughs)! Read The Full Interview
CD- Review - Dan MacIntosh Ariel Publicity . "Vere has gone through some major life changes over the past decade or so, and you cannot understand the present and future, without also analyzing the past. Just to Be is a fine ideal........we are made to embrace what we were, are, and hope to become, and this 11-song release finds Vere appreciating the here and now as best she can. There are moments when Vere comes off somewhat like a female version of John Denver. It’s not hard to imagine that Rocky Mountain man, for instance, singing the praises of nature, as happens during “My Backyard”, or considering a family heirloom, as Vere does with “Grandma’s Old Guitar”. Folk is probably the most encapsulating description of what Vere creates, although there’s a whole lot of country thrown into this mix. Vere is at her country best during “Which Train Did I Miss”, which rumbles down the tracks at a mighty powerful clip. It’s a road song, and every songwriter’s got one in him/her"
Press April 2010 - "Just To Be" is the beginning of an outstanding career that draws from a myriad of life experiences and musical stories. If There is one thing that Toni Vere wants to say to say about her CD and advise she gives to her fans it's this: " We all have the right to be who we are. I have struggled with trying to be who people thought I should be for the lions share of my life." - Gay Calgary - by Sam Casselman
"This woman's songwriting is like a big-wheel pushing a semi; there's something simple and playful behind a thundering, ground-shaking experience. "

"The first song that came up is "Wonder Why I'm Here", and I immediately like and am drawn to the unique sound of the mandolin. Your deep and crystal clear vocals are very expressive! I like the message of your song and the organized form and story development. Good use of details and visual imagery! The production seems folky and deliberate with good dynamic builds throughout." - Kristin Cifielli Artist Development www.wearelistening.org
"Toni, who you are is wonderful and I am glad you have found such joy. I am also proud to know you, proud that your dreams are coming true and I am inspired to remember my own dreams. You are loved and supported, just for being you! Hug*hug!!" - Annette Barnes
"A lot of people ask me every gig, "how can you work so hard for Toni and Hashmagandy." Well the benefits that I see are so amazing to my heart and soul it makes it easy to try and do my little part. Feeling the song "Cut Me Down" being born right in the truck the other night was phenomenal. Driving home from the Thursday night jam at The Gate, the cab gets filled with the heaviest but most beautiful energy I have ever felt. The stream, pardon me...river, started to pour into Toni and before you know it she was asking for a pen. I usually have them ready but I must say I was unprepared this time. So we drove the rest of the way home in silence. Parked the truck, and I told Toni I'd bring the guitar and she headed straight for the studio. An hour later "Cut Me Down" was finished. We recorded it that night on Toni's H2, nowhere near where it needs to be as a recording, but the message is clear. It you ever feel you have got the short end of the stick for who you are or what you believe then this song is yours" - Marilyn McIntosh

- Lindsay Wilson, Beatroute (Jan 06, 2010)
“It’s not that she came out as a lesbian, it’s that she allowed herself the freedom to be herself,” says longtime friend, sound engineer and artist, Jeff Legrand. “She’s thrown her heart and soul into her music, and I think it shows, creating the attraction that people have for her. She’s sincere, she’s REAL, and people like that a lot in today’s world of fakes, pre-formated, predetermined careers, and media-made sensations that can’t back up the press they get. Her passion is instantly evident, and she fights for what she believes in.” - Lindsay Wilson Read the full article- Gala Magazine Premier Issue March 2010 |
